My name is Emily MacLeod, and I am currently doing a co-op as part of my fashion design program at the University of Cincinnati. While I’m at MALVAR = STEWART, I’ll be writing the blog posts every so often. I hope you will enjoy them! The next few posts have been written throughout the semester because so much has been occurring and the website was still under construction. The following post was written a few months back in January.
The first larger event happening soon for Celeste, Horacio, and I is the Experience Columbus meeting happening on the 10th. I will be attending to help Celeste and Horacio with anything they may need while they basically MC the entire event, which includes a presentation of a gown from their Verano Bridal collection. This is the annual main meeting of Experience Columbus, which will serve as good exposure for HANGAR 391. All sorts of politicians and local figures will be there to hear about what new features of Columbus will bring in tourists as this city continues to grow.
At the HANGAR, I have been experimenting with iron and tara powder in my pursuit of the perfect shade of grey for the Local Sound collection (information about this project can be found on the Collaboration page of malvarstewart.com). For those of you unfamiliar with natural dyes, iron has been used since medieval times to naturally achieve black. Tara powder, which is high in tannin (found in tea), neutralizes some of the iron. Once I find the spectrum of greys we need for the collection, you will start to see some of the pieces for the collection!
Another project that has been ongoing for the entirety of my time here at HANGAR 391 is ecobundling for Buffington’s Flowers. Although the actual process of ecobundling is not lengthy or difficult, it is very hard to predict how the bundles will turn out. This being said, Celeste and I have been getting better sensibilities about how different fabrics react to the florals.
Check out the photo series below on the making of an ecobundle using Buffington’s florals! Stay tuned for updates on Experience Columbus and other projects!
